New York (US): The 68th Commission on the Status of Women (CSW68), the largest annual UN gathering focused on advancing women’s rights, saw India take a leading role in driving forward the agenda. With its theme of ‘Accelerating Gender Equality Through Poverty Alleviation and Strengthened Institutions’, the high-level event held in New York from March 11-22 provided a platform for nations to collaborate on this critical issue.
India, a vocal champion of women’s empowerment globally, organized four thought-provoking panel discussions that explored key challenges impacting women today. The first examined how public-private partnerships can fuel progress, highlighting India’s G20 Women’s Empowerment working group. A second addressed the transformative power of female leadership, showcasing India’s ‘Hum: When Women Lead’ initiative celebrating 75 change-makers.
Tackling the issue of gender-based violence, a third event explored how grassroots solutions and cross-sector cooperation can create safer communities for women and girls. India’s ‘Sambal’ and ‘Samarthya’ programs under ‘Mission Shakti’ were held up as examples of combating this scourge. Financial independence for women was the focus of the final panel hosted with the All India Women’s Education Fund Association.
In addition to outlining schemes like Sambal and Samarthya, India emphasized the need for global solidarity in its address. Permanent Representative Ruchira Kamboj and former Niti Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant called for inclusive, collaborative efforts between nations. UN Women Executive Director Sima Sami Bahous also hailed India’s progress and commitment to women’s leadership rights.
By hosting thought-provoking discussions and showcasing impactful domestic initiatives, India defined itself as a pioneer for gender parity on the world stage. Its presence at CSW68 demonstrated an unflinching dedication to empowering women and advancing equality worldwide.
