Police stated on Wednesday that a militant was killed in a confrontation with security personnel in the Wagoora Nowgam region on the outskirts of Srinagar.
“SrinagarEncounterUpdate: 01 unidentified #terrorist killed. Search going on. Further details shall follow,” said a spokesman on Twitter.
The gunfight broke out late last night after J&K Police and CRPF launched an operation in the area following inputs about the presence of militants there.
An official said that the hiding militants opened fire after the forces approached the suspected spot during the searches.
He said that the fire was retaliated, triggering an encounter. “All the exit and entrance points of the area have been sealed to prevent the militants from escaping,” he said.
The slain was identified as Uzair Ashraf Dar, son of Mohd Ashraf Dar, a resident of Wandina Melhoora in Wachi area of Zainapora belt in south Kashmir’s Shopian district, a police source said.
He said that Dar had joined militant ranks on 02 January 2021.
The source said that a pistol, one magazine, six rounds and two grenades were recovered from the encounter site.
