TOKYO, Jul 28: A powerful earthquake measuring a preliminary magnitude of 7.1 struck Japan’s southern main island of Kyushu on Tuesday, prompting authorities to issue a tsunami advisory, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said.
The earthquake occurred at 4:29 pm local time at a depth of 10 kilometres beneath the sea off Kumamoto in western Kyushu, approximately 900 kilometres southwest of Tokyo.
No casualties or damage were immediately reported following the tremor.
The JMA issued a tsunami advisory for coastal areas after the quake, while monitoring the situation for any further developments.
The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no threat of a tsunami beyond local coastal areas, indicating that any impact would be limited to regions near the epicentre.
Authorities continued to assess the situation and urged residents in affected coastal areas to remain alert and follow official advisories. (Agencies)
