VPN Use Banned in Several J&K Districts

SRINAGAR, Dec 30: Several districts in Jammu and Kashmir have imposed a ban on the use of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), citing security concerns, as authorities step up mobile phone surveillance to ensure strict compliance with the orders.

Kupwara, Kulgam and Shopian are the latest districts in the Valley to enforce the ban, warning of legal action against violators. The move follows reports from security agencies about increased VPN usage by suspicious internet users.

In an order issued by Kupwara Magistrate Shrikant Balasaheb Suse, reference was made to communications from police highlighting a surge in VPN use in the district. The order stated that VPN services could be exploited for unlawful and anti-national activities, including incitement of unrest, dissemination of misleading or inflammatory content, and coordination of actions prejudicial to public order, tranquillity and national security.

The magistrate directed police to ensure strict enforcement of the ban in letter and spirit and cautioned that any violation would invite legal action. Similar prohibitory orders have been issued by the district magistrates of Shopian and Kulgam.

Officials said several other districts across Jammu and Kashmir have already imposed similar restrictions, and more than 10 people have been booked for using VPN applications over the past month.

Last week, two persons were booked in Doda district for violating prohibitory orders after they were found using VPN services on their mobile phones. They were identified as Khalid Abrar and Mohammad Irfan.

Authorities said misuse of VPNs for activities such as spreading misinformation, bypassing security measures or coordinating unlawful acts poses a threat to public order and national security, prompting the temporary bans. (Agencies)
