Vaishno Devi Yatra Resumes After 22-Day Suspension

KATRA, Sep 17: The pilgrimage to Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district resumed on Wednesday, 22 days after a devastating landslide killed 34 people and injured 20.

Officials said the yatra restarted at 6 a.m. from both routes leading to the hilltop shrine, following essential track maintenance and favorable weather conditions. The Shrine Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) announced the reopening, bringing relief to hundreds of devotees waiting at Katra base camp.

Pilgrims thronged the Banganga Darshani gate early in the morning, expressing joy over the resumption. The board has mandated RFID-based tracking for transparency and urged devotees to carry valid ID, follow designated pathways, and cooperate with staff.

Thanking pilgrims for their patience, shrine board officials said the reopening reflects “collective faith and resilience.” With Navratri starting September 22, the yatra is expected to witness a surge in devotees.

The pilgrimage had been suspended on August 26, hours before a major landslide struck the route, causing heavy casualties. (Agencies)
