    Treading carefully this Monsoon

The damages caused by the monsoon in the year 2025 are still fresh in the memories of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. There were a number of cloudburst, landslides, flash floods and other calamities killing several people and damaging properties and civic infrastructure worth crores of rupees. Unfortunately many families are still struggling to overcome the ordeal through which they went through.

As the monsoon has arrived again, with a few cases of cloudbursts and flash floods being reported from various areas falling in Jammu Division, it has become necessary that this time the stakeholders should remain cautious to make it doubly sure that no life and property remain safe under all circumstances arising out of inclement weather conditions and its consequences. To make this a reality, it is important to stay alert, follow safety warnings, and avoid vulnerable areas during the inclement weather conditions.

The Jammu and Kashmir comprises all kinds of terrains and it is not possible for the government to reach out to every nook and corner of the Union Territory making it necessary for the people to stay updated through weather advisories issued by the government agencies, and act with care to reduce damage and protect lives. In this context, Kishtwar Administration has issued a warning of heavy rainfall leading to flash floods and landslides across the district till July 5, asking the people to remain wary and not venture out near water bodies and other vulnerable locations. Besides, the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Poonch has also placed healthcare institutions on high alert following weather advisory for heavy to very heavy rainfall in the district with the possibility of flash floods, landslides and other emergencies. This approach of the different district administrations is quite laudable because timely sharing of information can prove helpful in saving lives and properties.

The administrations of all the districts in Jammu and Kashmir should take a cue from the people at the helm in Poonch and Kishtwar and show similar spirit in issuing weather advisories as the monsoon is expected to become intense in the coming days. Through joint effort, awareness and caution the loss of life and property can be prevented therefore it becomes important that the safety and preparedness must guide every action during this monsoon.
