Panchkula is set to host some exciting junior badminton action from September 12th as the 31st edition of the prestigious Smt Krishna Khaitan Memorial All India Junior Ranking tournament gets underway. Regarded as one of the biggest junior events in the domestic calendar, the week-long competition is recognised by the Badminton Association of India (BAI) and will be organised by Express Shuttle Club Trust at Tau Devi Lal Sports Complex.
Over 1100 young shuttlers are expected to battle for top honors in the Under-19 boys and girls singles, doubles and mixed doubles categories. A total prize purse of Rs. 4 lakh is on offer with quarterfinalists in the boys and girls singles categories also in line for awards. Players born on or after January 1st, 2006 are eligible to participate in the tournament which carries important BAI ranking points for junior players.
Entries for the event which serves as an important pathway for junior players will close on August 21st with the qualifications scheduled from September 12th-15th. The main draw matches will then take place from September 16th-19th on 10 wooden courts under the supervision of BAI certified officials including referees and judges. Players from different states competing in doubles will need no objection certificates from their respective associations.
The competition has unearthed several talented players over the years including London 2012 bronze medalist Saina Nehwal and double Olympic champion P.V Sindhu who won the under-19 girls title in 2005 and 2010 respectively. Last year, Anmol Kharb and Pranauv Ram won the under-19 titles in the girls and boys singles. Organisers are hopeful of another exciting edition as the hunt intensifies for the next generation of Indian shuttlers looking to make their mark in the sport.
