Top Indian Players Miss Out on Chance to Prepare for Test Season

Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar believes some of 's star players could have benefited from playing in the Duleep Trophy ahead of a busy Test season.

India is set to play 10 Tests over the coming months, starting with a two-match series against Bangladesh in September. They will then host neighbours New Zealand for two more Tests before embarking on a highly anticipated tour of Australia for five Tests.

However, regular Test captain Rohit Sharma, former skipper Virat Kohli and pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah will all miss the opportunity to get valuable red-ball practice in the Duleep Trophy, which begins this week.

Manjrekar pointed out that while these players have been rested for parts of the last five years, they are still among India's most experienced Test performers. Rohit has in just 59% of India's matches, Kohli 61% and Bumrah 34% in the time period.

The commentator argued they could have been selected for the Duleep Trophy to sharpen their skills ahead of a punishing schedule. Batting against quality spin looked susceptible for India recently.

Excluding the trio, several first-choice Test regulars will take part as teams were announced for the tournament. It provides a chance for players to impress selectors and push their case ahead of the season.

With 15 Tests on the cards through to 2025 excluding any final, opportunities may be limited. The Duleep Trophy could have helped Rohit, Kohli and Bumrah prepare fully to make a strong start to India's Test Championship campaign.
