The Tragic Life and Career of Bollywood Icon Sanjeev Kumar

Sanjeev Kumar was one of the most talented actors in Bollywood who sadly passed away at the young age of 47. Known by his friends as ‘Haribhai’, Kumar dominated the Indian film industry from the 1960s through early 1980s with memorable performances in over 165 movies. What many fans may not know is that a palm reading early in his career led Kumar to obsess over playing elderly roles, despite being in his 20s and 30s at the time.

A fortuneteller reportedly told Kumar he wouldn’t live to an old age. This eerily accurate prediction had a profound impact on the actor’s career path. He began seeking out roles portraying older father figures, in order to authentically experience that stage of life he felt he wouldn’t personally reach. This led to iconic parts like the tough village chief Thakur in Sholay, and the paternal RK Gupta opposite Amitabh Bachchan in Trishul, both released when Kumar was under 40 years old.

Kumar’s preoccupation with elderly roles began even earlier in his theatrical career. Close friend and actress Tabassum revealed he had confided in her about desperately wanting to inhabit characters of advanced age on screen. His skills at transforming into wrinkled patriarchs were so convincing, audiences and directors never doubted his abilities. While some questioned his career choices at the time, history shows Kumar’s prescient decision allowed him to tackle a diverse array of complex parts.

Tragically, Kumar’s prediction came true. He succumbed to a massive heart attack in 1985 at the unexpectedly young age of 47, leaving fans in shock and mourning the loss of one of Hindi cinema’s greatest talents. Though his life was brief, Sanjeev Kumar ensured his artistic legacy would live on through his memorable portrayals – perfectly capturing the humanity in both the young and old.
