Multiplayer first-person shooter Valorant, which was initially released for PC two years ago, has now expanded to the newest gaming consoles. Developer Riot Games soft-launched the title on PlayStation 5 and Microsoft's Xbox Series S/X in June and has now rolled out a full launch.
The console versions of Valorant are now available digitally for players in the United States, Canada, Europe, Japan and Brazil. Gamers can now enjoy the exact same gameplay, Agents and competitive experiences on their consoles that PC players have been enjoying. Cross-progression is also supported, meaning any unlocked Agents, skins or ranks from the PC version will carry over.
While cross-play between PC and consoles won't be enabled to ensure fair competition, Riot has optimized Valorant specifically for controllers with adjustments like a new “Focus” shooting mode. This aims to give players precision aiming options similar to other console shooters. The developer also aims to deliver consistent updates, new content and balanced patches simultaneously across formats.
Only time will tell if Valorant can achieve the same success on consoles that it has seen on PC since launch. But with its tactical gameplay, approachable mechanics and free-to-play model, it seems well positioned to attract new audiences. Riot intends to continue expanding availability in the coming months.
