Empowering the youth of India and harnessing their energy for national cause

    Puran Chand Sharma

India is called the ‘youngest nation’ among major countries because of its enormous youth population. Nearly half of India’s population is below the age of 30. This youth strength is not merely a demographic figure; it is a mighty national asset capable of turning India into a prosperous, innovative, disciplined and morally strong nation. The future of India would largely depend upon how effectively the energy, creativity, patriotism, and talent of its youth are channelized toward constructive national goals.

However, the questions before the nation are, “Are we truly empowering our youth, or are we merely celebrating statistics? Are we adequately preparing them for leadership, responsibility, moral strength and nation building?” These questions really call for deep introspection.

    YOUTH: THE GREATEST NATIONAL RESOURCE:

The Youth of India possess extraordinary potential. They are energetic, ambitious, technologically adaptable, emotionally passionate and eager to contribute. Throughout History, young people have played decisive roles in shaping nations. India’s freedom struggle was itself energized by brave young patriots like Bhagat Singh, Chandra Shekhar Azad, Subash Chandra Bose and countless others who sacrificed comfort and even life for the nation.

In modern India too, youth contribute immensely in science, sports, defense, entrepreneurship, arts, technology, agriculture and public service. If groomed and guided properly, Indian youth can transform themselves to become:

    –         Builders of a strong economy

    –         Guardians of national unity

    –         Innovators in science and technology

    –         Protectors of culture and environment

    –         Ethical political leaders

    –         Responsible global citizens.

The dream of a developed India and self-reliant India cannot be realized without empowered youth.

THE NEED TO HARNESS YOUTH ENERGY FOR NATIONAL CAUSE

Youth energy is like a mighty river. If properly channelized, it irrigates fields and generates power; if neglected it may flood and destroy. Therefore, the role of society, family, education system, media and government become very crucial.

    –         India needs youth participation in:

    –         Nation building activities

    –         Rural development

    –         Environmental protection

    –         Innovation and start-ups

    –         Armed forces and civil services

    –         Social harmony and constitutional values

    –         Scientific research and technological advancement.

The country requires not only skilled youth, but also morally conscious and socially responsible youth. Merely producing degree holders is insufficient. There is need to cultivate character, discipline, patriotism, compassion and leadership qualities among young citizens.

    CHALLENGES IN GROOMING THE YOUTH

Despite immense potential, several obstacles hinder the proper development of youth.

    1. Education without character formation

One of the greatest concerns today is that education often focuses excessively on marks, competition, and employment while neglecting moral education, civic responsibility, emotional maturity, and ethical values. Students may become professionally qualified, but remain internally confused, directionless or emotionally weak. Education must shape both intellect and character.

    1. Rising unemployment and skill gap

Another major challenge facing Indian youth is unemployment as well as underemployment. Many educated young people struggle to find meaningful jobs because of out-dated curriculum, lack of practical skills, weak industry- academia linkage, limited vocational training and unequal opportunities between urban and rural areas. This creates frustration, hopelessness and loss of confidence.

    1. Influence of Social media and Digital distraction

Technology is a blessing when used wisely, but uncontrolled digital addiction is becoming a serious concern. Excessive social media usage often leads to:

    –         Reduced concentration

    –         Emotional instability

    –         Comparison and inferiority complex

    –         Declining reading habits

    –         Spread of misinformation

    –         Isolation from real social life.

Many young minds are becoming consumers of shallow entertainment rather than seekers of knowledge and wisdom.

    1. Decline of moral and cultural values

Materialism, blind consumerism and excessive individualism are weakening ethical foundations. Respect for elders, discipline, patience, and social responsibility sometimes appear to be declining. Youth require modern education, but they also need cultural roots and moral grounding.

    1. Mental stress and Emotional pressure

Today’s youth face enormous psychological pressure arising from academic competition, career uncertainty, family expectations, social comparisons, fear of failure. Many suffer silently from anxiety, loneliness or low self- esteem. Emotional wellness is becoming an urgent national issue.

    1. Substance Abuse and Negative influences

In some regions, drug abuse, violence, radicalization and unhealthy peer influence are affecting. Idle energy without constructive channelisation becomes vulnerable to destructive tendencies. This is not merely an individual problem but a social and national concern.

ARE WE VIGILANT AND SERIOUS ENOUGH?

India certainly has many positive initiatives in education, skill development, entrepreneurship, and digital empowerment. Yet, as a society, we must honestly admit that there are gaps in seriousness and implementation. Often, moral education is treated as secondary; Career guidance is inadequate; Sports and arts receive limited encouragement; Rural youth remain neglected; Teachers are overburdened; Parents sometimes prioritize marks over values; Political systems occasionally exploit youth emotions rather than nurture leadership qualities. The nation celebrates youth power on ceremonial occasions, but sustained investment in their holistic development needs greater urgency.

SLACKNESS IN HANDLING AND EDUCATING YOUTH

The slackness is visible in multiple areas like

    –         Weak Educational Reforms: Many institutions still promote rote learning instead of creativity, innovation and critical thinking.

    –         Limited Mentorship: Large numbers of youth lack inspiring mentors who can guide them toward constructive goals.

    –         Poor Career Counselling: Students often choose careers blindly under social pressures rather than according to their aptitude and passion.

    –         Insufficient Physical and Moral Training: Physical fitness, discipline, civic duty, and moral values must be the integral parts of education.

    –         Urban-Rural Divide:-Talented rural youth frequently lack access to quality, digital infrastructure, and opportunities. These shortcomings reduce the effectiveness of India’s demographic advantage.

    SOLUTIONS AND WAY FORWARD

    1. Value-Based Education *India urgently needs education that combines: Knowledge, Skills, Ethics, Patriotism, Compassion, Constitutional values. Schools should nurture responsible citizens, not merely examination performers.
    2. Skill Development and Employment Generation: Practical and Industry oriented skills must be expanded in Agriculture, Technology, Manufacturing, Artificial Intelligence, Renewable Energy, Entrepreneurship and Rural Industries. Youth must become job CREATORS, not just job SEEKERS.
    3. Strong Mentorship And Leadership: Teachers, parents, social leaders and institutions must actively mentor young minds. Leadership camps, NCC, NSS, Sports and community service programmes should be strengthened.
    4. Mental Health Awareness: Counselling systems in schools and colleges should become stronger. Youth must feel safe discussing stress, fear, and emotional struggles. Emotional resilience is as important as academic success.
    5. Responsible Use of Technology: Digital literacy should include Critical Thinking, Cyber Ethics, Time management and Awareness against misinformation. Technology should empower youth intellectually rather than enslave them psychologically.
    6. National Service Orientation: Youth building activities should be encouraged through Environmental campaigns, Literacy Missions, Rural Development, Disaster Management, Civic cleanliness Drives and Community Service. Such engagement develops discipline, empathy, and patriotism.
    7. Revival of Moral and Cultural Foundations: India’s timeless civilizational wisdom emphasizing duty, self-discipline and harmony, wisdom and respect for humanity should be meaningfully integrated into modern life. Modernity and morality must move together.

    CONCLUSION

The youth of India are not merely the future of the nation; they are its living strength in the present. Their energy can elevate India to great heights. However, if neglected, it may result in social instability and frustration. Therefore, empowering youth is not an option, it is a national necessity. The need of the hour is not only educated youth, but enlightened youth, not only ambitious youth, but responsible youth; not only technologically skilled youth but morally awakened youth. Luckily, at the moment we are on the right track and our youth are well poised to make India self-reliant and a globally respected country.
