As the Paralympic Games get underway in Paris later this month, all eyes will be on Indian para-athlete Sumit Antil to continue racking up medals on the biggest stage. The defending champion javelin thrower is aiming to build on the success of Neeraj Chopra and inspire more through his performances in the French capital.
Chopra's gold medal winning exploits at the Tokyo Olympics last year captivated the nation. He followed it up with a heroic silver winning effort at this summer's Paris Games. Now, Antil wants to keep India's name in the medals by defending his F64 category title from Tokyo. “The way Neeraj has taken javelin throwing to new levels is remarkable. I hope to motivate people in a similar way through my efforts in Paris,” said the 26-year-old.
Antil has been in sensational form since winning gold in Tokyo. He broke the world record in 2023 before defending his Asian Para Games and World Championship crowns last year. With improvements in each outing, he will fly the Indian flag at the opening ceremony brimming with confidence. However, the Haryana athlete isn't stressing over expectations. “My sole target is to better my personal best and threaten the 75m mark. The competition will be tough but I'm focused on maximizing my ability on the day,” he commented.
India will count on their defending champions like Antil and sharpshooter Avani Lekhara to repeat their gold winning performances. Meanwhile, stars such as discus thrower Yogesh Kathuniya and paddler Bhavina Patel will be hoping to upgrade their silver medals to gold. With improved preparations after Tokyo, the 84-member strong contingent will have their sights set on bettering the record 19 medal haul from three years ago.
The Paris Paralympics get underway on August 28th with India eager to grab attention through their para athletes. While Neeraj mania may have faded, Sumit Antil now shoulders the responsibility of keeping the gold rush going for the country on sport's biggest disabled stage.
