It is important that all entities in the vicinity take the avalanche warnings very seriously because it is not about overcoming fear rather it is about showing respect for nature, science and precious human life. It is pertinent to mention that the concerned authorities in Jammu and Kashmir have issued a high-danger avalanche warning for six districts of the Union territory following fresh snowfall.
It has been categorically stated that high-danger-level avalanches are likely to occur above 2,300 metres in Ganderbal district, in Central Kashmir, during the next 24 hours and similar avalanches are expected above 2,500 metres over districts including Doda, Kishtwar, Poonch and Ramban in the Jammu region, and Kupwara in North Kashmir.
With the forecast by the MeT department coming true, most parts of Jammu and Kashmir had received moderate to heavy snowfall making it necessary to take the avalanche warning very seriously. It is in the interest of one and all to remain cautious and avoid venturing into avalanche-prone areas.
As science has become so advanced today that it can provide cues with certainty about the occurrence of avalanches therefore there is no point in ignoring such advisories especially when the region has a past record of several casualties due to such natural phenomena that occurred at various places across Jammu and Kashmir.
The people dwelling near the avalanche prone regions should always remember that ignoring these warnings can turn preventable hazards into catastrophic tragedies, which should not be the case and therefore it is advisable that all take adequate precautions till the time the authorities lift the danger warnings. Taking these instructions lightly can prove suicidal because the basis for issuing such warning is completely scientific and there are chances of occurrence of dangerous avalanches in the areas mentioned.
