Shakib Al Hasan fires back after criticism, powers Bangladesh to crucial win
After facing flak for his underwhelming batting performances in Bangladesh’s initial T20 World Cup matches, veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan delivered just when his team needed it the most. Shakib smashed a gritty 46-ball 64 to help the Tigers post a competitive 159 against Netherlands, before the bowlers sealed a crucial 25-run victory.
The win has boosted Bangladesh’s chances of qualifying for the Super 8 stage. However, Shakib’s sub-par contributions earlier in the tournament had drawn sharp criticism from some quarters. Former India opener Virender Sehwag was among those who questioned the 37-year-old’s place in the team, citing his failure to deliver on the big stage.
But Shakib had the perfect response with the bat on Thursday. When asked about the criticism post-match, the cool customer stated that he isn’t here to answer anyone. “A player’s job is to perform for the team. Sometimes luck also plays a role besides skill. But I’m always looking to contribute in whatever way I can,” he remarked.
Shakib, who has years of experience leading the side, further explained that scrutiny comes with the territory for experienced players struggling for runs. But he remains focused on letting his willow do the talking. With this match-winning knock, the veteran left-hander has surely silenced his doubters in style. Bangladesh will now hope he can carry his revival in form deeper into the tournament.
