    Self-Medication Is Dangerous

Self-medication is the habit of taking medicines without seeking the consultation of a qualified doctor or other authorised medical professional. It is a common practice that people avoid consulting doctors for ailments such as fever, cold and cough, headache, etc., and prefer to buy medicines on their own or on the advice of chemists, who are not authorised to prescribe them. This practice can be dangerous and may cause serious side effects.

A person may take the wrong medicine, the wrong dose, or use a medicine that is not suitable for his or her health condition. There are many medicines that the government has mandated be sold only with doctors’ prescriptions to stop their misuse by the people through the practice of self-medication.

In this context, now the Union Health Ministry has amended rules to prohibit sale of syrups, including cough syrups, without a doctor’s prescription. The move is aimed at bringing syrup-based formulations, including cough syrups, under stricter regulatory oversight. This was a necessary step and is likely to go a long way in ensuring the safety of the people who often take this important issue for granted and consume medicines according to their own whims and fancies.

Schedule K specifies categories of drugs that are exempt from certain provisions relating to manufacture, sale and distribution under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act and Rules, subject to prescribed conditions. The move follows a draft notification issued by the government in December last year seeking objections and suggestions from stakeholders.

This is a good step to prevent the misuse of medicines. However, it is important that similar rules are applied to all medicines. People should always consult an authorised medical professional before taking any medicine. This helps ensure safe and effective treatment and protects people from unnecessary health risks.

The decision on syrups has come against the backdrop of increased regulatory scrutiny of cough syrups and other liquid oral formulations in recent years following reports of contamination-linked deaths of children in several countries including India.

The time has come for the government to introduce stringent laws against unauthorised sale of medicines as self-medication is proving risky in many cases because ordinary people cannot judge which medicine is suitable for them and which is not. The solution to this is to follow one rule: always take medicines on the advice of doctors.
