Security clampdown on separatists ahead of LS by-polls
The move is being seen as an attempt to oppose the separatist faction's proposed election boycott campaign.
Keeping in mind the upcoming parliamentary polls in Kashmir next month, security forces have taken preventive measures targeting the state's separatist faction.
According to information received, around 30 leaders, including Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik, have either been placed under preventive custody or have been detained.
While senior leaders have either been jailed or placed under house arrest, the lower-rung leadership is on the run as police have started conducting raids on their houses.
The move is being seen as an attempt to oppose the faction's proposed election boycott campaign. The Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency is going to polls on April 9 while the South Kashmir Assembly seat will see election being held on April 12.The police crackdown on resistance camps comes at a time when mainstream parties, including PDP, National Conference and Congress, have stepped up their campaign activities.
According to a statement issued by Geelani's Hurriyat’s group, police is continuously raiding the houses of its middle rung leaders, placing many of them have been arrested.
Geelani himself continues to remain under house arrest. while Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chief Yasin Malik was arrested outside his office in Lal Chowk and has been shifted to the Srinagar central jail a 12-day remand. Mirwaiz, on the other hand, has been placed under house arrest.
Leaders like Nayeem Khan and Shahid ul Islam were arrested today. Both of them were scheduled to fly to Delhi to attend the March 23 Pakistan National Day celebrations invitation of the Pakistan High Commission.
