Security Breach at Parliament: Intruder Scales 20-Metre Wall, Caught

New Delhi, Aug 22: In a major security lapse, a man on Friday morning scaled a tree and climbed over the 20-metre-high wall of Parliament House before reaching the Garuda Gate of the new Parliament building, officials said.

The incident occurred around 6:30 am when the intruder entered from the Rail Bhavan side and jumped over the wall, which is about 15 metres away from the gate. He was immediately caught by security personnel and is being interrogated.

The breach comes a day after the monsoon session of Parliament ended amid repeated disruptions.

This is not the first such incident. Last year, a man in his early 20s was caught after scaling the Parliament Annexe wall. In 2023, on the anniversary of the 2001 Parliament terror attack, six people were arrested after releasing coloured gas canisters inside and outside Parliament and raising slogans, triggering a major security review.

Earlier this week, the Delhi High Court sought the police’s response on a bail plea filed by one of the accused, Lalit Jha, in the 2023 case.
