As the New Year approaches, the revered Shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi is once again witnessing a steady rise in the number of pilgrims. This annual surge is not merely a matter of numbers; it reflects the deep-rooted faith of devotees who begin the year by seeking blessings at one of India’s most sacred religious destinations. With expectations that nearly two lakh pilgrims may arrive in the coming week, the focus has rightly shifted toward preparedness, safety, and smooth management of the pilgrimage.
The rising rush inevitably recalls the tragic incident of the recent past. On January 1, 2022, a crowd crush near Gate No. 3 at the Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra claimed 12 lives and left 16 others injured. The incident, which occurred on New Year’s eve, exposed serious gaps in crowd regulation and highlighted the risks posed by uncontrolled movement of pilgrims during peak hours. The tragedy remains a grim reminder of the consequences of complacency in managing large religious gatherings.
Keeping these lessons in view, the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, in coordination with the district administration, police, security forces and intelligence agencies, has strengthened arrangements this season. Security deployment has been enhanced across Katra, along the track and at the Bhawan, while surveillance and monitoring mechanisms have been reinforced to ensure effective crowd management. The administration’s proactive approach is crucial in view of the rising daily arrivals.
Pilgrim numbers have already shown a marked increase. While earlier daily arrivals ranged between 15,000 and 20,000, the figure has now risen to nearly 25,000. On December 24 alone, over 24,000 pilgrims undertook the yatra, followed by a sustained inflow on subsequent days. These figures underline the scale of the challenge and the need for continuous monitoring.
Despite fluctuating weather conditions, essential services have remained functional. Helicopter services from Katra, battery car facilities on the Bhawan track and the ropeway service have operated smoothly, helping regulate movement and reduce congestion on the pilgrimage route.
However, ensuring safety is not the sole responsibility of the authorities. Pilgrims must also exercise restraint and follow advisories and instructions issued from time to time. Avoiding unnecessary haste and adhering to prescribed routes are essential to prevent mishaps.
As the Shrine Board braces for peak New Year footfall, ensuring effective crowd regulation must remain the foremost priority. The tragic events of 2022 should serve as a constant reminder that even momentary lapses can have grave consequences. Strict enforcement of crowd control measures, timely dissemination of advisories, and responsible behaviour by pilgrims are essential. A coordinated, vigilant approach by all concerned is the only way to ensure that the pilgrimage proceeds smoothly and safely, without a recurrence of past tragedies.
