Rlys boost Cherry trade, 43 tons dispatched from J&K

Jammu Tawi, May 27: Indian Railways has facilitated the transportation of around 43 tons of fresh cherries from Jammu and Kashmir to major markets across the country so far this season, providing a boost to growers and traders.

The consignments were dispatched through parcel services using SLR and Parcel Vans in trains including 12472, 12474, 12476, 12920 and 19028, and delivered to destinations such as Surat, Bandra, Bhopal and Chhayapuri (Vadodara).

Officials said the rail-based transport system has enabled faster and safer movement of perishable fruit, ensuring better quality preservation and reduced transit losses, which in turn is helping farmers secure improved market prices.

Traders said the availability of SLR and VP facilities has made it easier for small and large operators to book consignments according to demand, improving accessibility and logistics efficiency during the peak cherry season.

Fruit growers from Jammu and adjoining regions have also benefited from reduced dependence on road transport, allowing direct access to major mandis across India.

According to Indian Railways, the initiative is also generating additional revenue through better utilisation of parcel space in passenger trains while strengthening agricultural supply chains.

Uchit Singhal said the railway system is providing efficient and economical logistics support to farmers, ensuring priority loading, safe handling and timely delivery of perishable produce.

He added that similar arrangements will continue for apples and other seasonal fruits in the coming months, further supporting horticulture-based livelihoods in the region.
