Ready To Step Down If Sangh Asks Me To Do So: Mohan Bhagwat

Mumbai, Feb 8: Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Sunday said he would step down from his post whenever the organization directs, despite being asked to continue working past his 75th birthday.

Speaking at an interactive session during the RSS centenary programme, Bhagwat clarified that there is no election for the post of RSS chief, as regional and divisional heads appoint the leader. “I have completed 75 years and informed the RSS, but the organisation asked me to continue working. Whenever the RSS asks me to step down, I will do so, but retirement from work will never happen,” he said.

Bhagwat stressed the importance of focusing on solutions rather than dwelling on problems. “As long as truth does not come forward, illusion remains effective,” he added.

In a lighter remark, he noted that the Sangh “extracts work till the last drop of blood from its volunteer” and claimed there has never been a situation in RSS history requiring retirement.

The RSS chief emphasized the organisation’s work is about inculcating values (“sanskar”), not campaigning. He said publicity should be like rainfall—timely and measured—and warned against excessive self-promotion that could lead to arrogance.

On language, Bhagwat stated that English would never be the primary medium of communication in RSS functioning, although it is used when necessary. He added that mastery of English should not come at the cost of forgetting one’s mother tongue.

Recalling interactions with southern states and the Indian diaspora, he said communication is conducted in Hindi or respective mother tongues, depending on the audience. (Agencies)
