“Gogoi Attempted To Legitimize Pakistan”: Assam CM Alleges Cong MP’s Links With Neighbouring Country

Dispur (Assam), Feb 8: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday alleged that Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi attempted to legitimise Pakistan through his wife, Elizabeth Colburn Gogoi, who allegedly had close ties with Pakistani national Ali Tauqeer Sheikh. The state cabinet has decided to refer the matter to a central agency for further investigation.

Speaking at a press conference, Sarma said Elizabeth Colburn Gogoi worked in Pakistan from March 18, 2011, to March 17, 2012, during which her family became closely connected with Ali Tauqeer Sheikh. The CM cited a viral photograph showing Gogoi visiting the Pakistan Embassy in Singapore with youth, claiming it reflected an attempt to “legitimise Pakistan.”

“This is an unprecedented incident,” Sarma said, noting the sacrifices of Indian soldiers during the Kargil War. “For a long time, I thought the picture was photoshopped. But after it was endorsed by Congress leaders, we realised it was true and began a full investigation.”

The CM added that the Assam Police SIT had already registered a case at the CID Police Station and, after reviewing the SIT report, the state cabinet decided the matter should now be investigated by a central agency through the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Sarma also questioned Ali Tauqeer Sheikh’s credentials as an environmentalist, alleging he was involved in matters related to Pakistan on the Indus Water Treaty. He said the SIT report purportedly proves direct links between Sheikh, Elizabeth Gogoi, and Gaurav Gogoi with Pakistan. The controversy dates back to February last year when the CM highlighted Sheikh’s multiple visits to India. Gaurav Gogoi has denied the allegations, calling them an attempt to divert attention from charges against the Assam Chief Minister. (Agencies)
