Russian leader Vladimir Putin stated in a new interview that though the nation has not felt compelled to activate its nuclear arsenal against Ukraine, it remains prepared to defend itself using any means necessary. When questioned directly about readiness for nuclear conflict, Putin asserted to state media outlets that from a military standpoint, Russia is always at the ready to deploy its formidable nuclear capabilities should the country’s sovereignty come under threat.
While not “rushing” towards atomic warfare currently, the president made clear that as commander-in-chief he retains the option to authorize nuclear retaliation if circumstances dictate. With his near-guaranteed reelection just days away on March 15th-17th, Putin’s comments serve as a stark reminder of the grave consequences Russia could unleash. As fighting in eastern Ukraine intensifies with no sign of stopping, Putin is leaving little doubt that he views nuclear deterrence as a core component of his country’s strength.
