Srinagar, Dec 5: Nasir Aslam Wani, Advisor to Jammu and Kashmir’s Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, announced on Thursday that the Council of Ministers has formally submitted a proposal to Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, seeking to reinstate December 5 as a public holiday in honor of the late Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah’s anniversary.
The proposal comes after the holiday was controversially canceled by the Lieutenant Governor administration in recent years.
Speaking to reporters during his visit to the mausoleum of Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah at Hazratbal, Wani expressed optimism that the holiday will be restored in time for next year. “This proposal has already been forwarded to the LG’s office, and we are hopeful that the people of Jammu and Kashmir will once again observe this significant day,” he said.
Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, the founder of the National Conference (NC), is remembered for his pivotal role in shaping Jammu and Kashmir’s political landscape. He played an instrumental role in liberating the region from autocratic rule and securing vital democratic rights for its people. Wani paid tribute to Sheikh Abdullah’s enduring legacy and transformative influence on the region’s modern history.
