A Tribute to the Leader of the Masses on His 92nd Birth Anniversary (13 April 1934 – 18 May 2021)

On the occasion of the 92nd birth anniversary of Prof. Chaman Lal Gupta, falling on 13th April 2026, we fondly remember a towering personality whose life continues to inspire generations.
Years may pass, but time can never fade those precious memories. His life, marked by simplicity and humility, remains a beacon of strength. Though he is no longer among us, his affection, dedication, hard work, sincerity, and sacrifice remain deeply engraved in our hearts. We pray for eternal peace to his noble soul.
18th May 2021 was indeed a sad day, especially for the people of Jammu & Kashmir and Delhi, when veteran BJP leader and former Union Minister Prof. Chaman Lal Gupta left for his heavenly abode. His passing marked the end of an era, but his legacy continues to live on.
A Visionary Leader and Mass Icon
Jammu lost a great visionary and popular political leader in Prof. Chaman Lal Gupta—an educationist, industrialist, pracharak, MLA, MP, and Union Minister. He played a vital role in the establishment and growth of the BJP in Jammu and Kashmir.
An extraordinary optimist, dynamic leader, and motivator, Prof. Gupta was among the most influential and enduring icons of Indian politics. He devoted his entire life to public service, always striving for the welfare and upliftment of society, particularly the underprivileged.
Born in Kaleeth village (Akhnoor), he rose through sheer dedication and perseverance despite hardships. A strong-willed and principled man, he impacted countless lives and left behind a rich and thought-provoking legacy.
Champion of Social Harmony and the Underprivileged
Prof. Gupta was known as a crusader against casteism and a bridge-builder across communities. He worked tirelessly to improve the lives of the downtrodden and always stood by the poor. His belief that “service to humanity is service to God” guided his actions.
His compassion and commitment earned him immense respect, with many regarding him as a guardian figure. Duggar land, known for producing remarkable personalities, takes pride in having given birth to such a dedicated son.
A Remarkable Political Journey
Prof. Chaman Lal Gupta’s political career spanned over six decades:
- First elected to the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly in 1972
- Served again as MLA from 2008 to 2014
- Elected to the 11th Lok Sabha from Udhampur in 1996, and re-elected in 1998 and 1999
He held several key positions in the Union Government under Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee:
- Minister of State for Civil Aviation (1999–2001)
- Minister of State (Independent Charge), Food Processing Industries (2001–2002)
- Minister of State for Defence (2002–2004)
He also served twice as President of the BJP in Jammu and Kashmir and authored three books in Hindi.
Early Activism and Nationalist Spirit
From his student days, Prof. Gupta was deeply inspired by nationalist ideals. As a young student in the early 1950s, he participated in movements demanding the hoisting of the national flag in Jammu and Kashmir, even undertaking a hunger strike.
He actively participated in the historic “Ek Vidhan, Ek Nishan, Ek Pradhan” movement led by Pt. Prem Nath Dogra and was detained for several months.
During the Emergency in 1975, he played a key organizational role across northern India, coordinating movements and enduring imprisonment along with other leaders.
Role During Militancy and National Movements
During the peak of militancy in the 1990s, Prof. Gupta stood firm against terrorism and worked for the protection of civilians. He played a significant role in establishing Village Defence Committees (VDCs) in Doda and other sensitive areas.
He was also associated with the historic Ekta Yatra, during which the national flag was hoisted at Lal Chowk, Srinagar, symbolizing national unity.
A staunch nationalist, he consistently advocated for the dignified rehabilitation of displaced Kashmiri Pandits.
Beyond Politics: A Life of Service
Apart from politics, Prof. Gupta was an educationist, industrialist, and social worker. He was closely associated with charitable organizations and served as Patron and President of the Swami Vivekananda Medical Mission.
He lived a simple life and maintained cordial relations across party lines. His approachable nature, affable manners, and visionary outlook endeared him to people from all walks of life.
A Lasting Legacy
Prof. Gupta’s demise created a void in the political and social landscape of Jammu and Kashmir that will be difficult to fill. His life remains a shining example of dedication, integrity, and service.
He is survived by his sons Anil Gupta and Dr. Vikas Gupta, and daughter Meenakshi Gupta.
Legends never die—they live on in the hearts of generations. Prof. Chaman Lal Gupta is one such enduring figure whose contributions will continue to inspire.
Appeal for National Recognition
The author takes this opportunity to appeal to the Union Government to consider conferring a high civilian award upon Prof. Chaman Lal Gupta for his immense contributions to society and the nation.
His lifelong service, sacrifices, and commitment to national unity make him a deserving candidate for such recognition.
