Media Moratorium in Kashmir Valley, Adm says to contain violence

Date:

Tawi, July 16 (Update) : The Police in a late mid-night swoop on Saturday seized the copies of local Urdu and English newspapers in Srinagar raiding the printing presses thus imposing an information moratorium in the valley as street violence continued. The mobile internet services have already been suspended for the last one week.

The many leading publishers on their websites have claimed that their print copies were seized and people working for the printing press were also held.

The Northlines spoke to few publishers of Urdu dailies who confirmed about the seizure of their printed copies from the Printing Presses – Khidmat, Kashmir Times etc. The Greater Kashmir has uploaded the news of seizure of their copies in mid-night raid on their press. They also alleged that their three workers were held by the police.

The District Administration had already suspended the local cable networks in the valley.

A high level police officer on condition of anonymity confirmed that such raids were conducted and copies of most of the newspapers had been seized for diffusing the violent situation in the valley as some of publications were carrying highly provocative material and unconfirmed reports. This is a temporary measure taken on the instructions of Administration in the public interest to diffuse the volatile situation and to prevent further loss of human life. However, he affirmed that there is no blanket ban on Information as BSNL Broad Band Internet Service and Satellite Channels are working fine in the Valley as before.
