New Delhi, Dec 12, 2024: President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday conferred the honorary rank of ‘General of the Indian Army’ on Nepal’s Army Chief, General Ashok Raj Sigdel, during a special investiture ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
This gesture is part of a long-standing tradition between India and Nepal, where the Army chiefs of both countries are honored with the title of Honorary General. The tradition has been in place since 1950. President Murmu’s office stated that the honor was conferred on General Sigdel “for his commendable military prowess and immeasurable contribution to further fostering Nepal’s long and friendly association with India.”
General Sigdel, who is on an official visit to India from December 11-14, is focusing on strengthening defense cooperation between the two nations. His visit is seen as a significant step in deepening bilateral ties, especially in defense and security.
Earlier, in November, Nepal’s President Ramchandra Paudel had conferred the honorary rank of General of Nepal Army on Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi during a special ceremony in Kathmandu, further emphasizing the strong military and diplomatic relations between the two neighboring countries.
