Goyal Returns as Commerce Minister After Winning Mumbai North Seat
Piyush Goyal will continue leading India’s commerce ministry, according to an official announcement on Monday. Goyal emerged victorious in the Mumbai North constituency, winning by over 3.5 lakh votes. This electoral success allows him to retain the important portfolio he has held since the previous government.
Having served India for over 35 years in various leadership roles with the BJP at different levels, the Mumbai North poll marked Goyal’s first experience contesting the Lok Sabha elections. During the last term, the veteran leader was a Rajya Sabha member and headed the Upper House.
Goyal has extensive experience handling significant responsibilities. He previously managed the railways and coal ministries from 2017-2019. On two occasions in 2018 and 2019, he additionally took charge of the pivotal finance ministry on an interim basis. Earlier roles included minister of state for power, coal, renewable energy and mines from 2014-2017.
Jitin Prasada joins Goyal as Minister of State in the Commerce Ministry. The department aims to further India’s trade agenda and bolster the economy. Under Goyal’s stewardship, it will focus on concluding pending free trade agreements while starting new talks to boost exports. Securing favorable deals with major markets like the UK, EU and Eurasian Union can aid the goal of achieving one trillion dollars in goods shipments annually by 2030.
Continuing his work, Goyal must also finalize long-delayed policies for e-commerce and special economic zones. As foreign investment dips, liberating rules may attract more capital to fuel growth. Successful implementation of the production-linked incentives scheme could spur local manufacturing as well. With his wealth of experience across multiple spheres, Goyal is well-equipped to guide the ministry during its next important phase.
