Srinagar, August 2: Two petrol bombs were thrown at Jammu and Kashmir Education Minister Naeem Akhtar's house in Parraypora late on Monday, as the Valley continues to remain on edge.
No one was hurt in the incident since Akhtar — a senior leader of the Peoples Democratic Party — and his family have moved to Gupkar Road after the PDP-BJP government was sworn in, in March last year.
Windowpanes of Akhtar's house were broken. The bomb also resulted in minor damage in one room of the house.
Akhtar — also PDP's spokesperson — first became minister under former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed in March last year, then under Mehbooba Mufti in April this year, three months after Mufti's death.
This is the second time Akhtar became a target of protesters' ire in less than a week: stones were pelted at his cavalcade in Sumbal area of Bandipore district in North Kashmir while he was on his way back to Srinagar last Saturday after a review of the area during the ongoing unrest in Kashmir.
Akhtar is one of the three PDP leaders who have been attacked since violent protests began in the Valley in July against Hizbul Mujahideen militant commander Burhan Wani's killing.
Mohammad Khalil Bandh, a PDP lawmaker from Pulwama, met with an accident in his constituency last month after his driver lost control of his vehicle when protesters pelted stones it. Bandh, a former minister, is currently in a hospital in New Delhi.
A violent mob attacked the hotel of Abdul Rahim Rather, a PDP MLA from Kokernag, early last month.
