With the Paris 2024 Olympics less than a year away, organizers are taking bold steps to minimize the event’s carbon footprint through sustainable measures. A major initiative is reducing meat consumption in the Games Village by promoting more plant-based meals.
According to officials, about 60% of the estimated 13 million meals and snacks prepared for athletes and personnel will feature vegan or vegetarian options. This is part of the broader goal to cut the Games’ carbon emissions in half compared to previous editions through tactics like sourcing local ingredients and employing renewable energy systems.
Switching to a largely plant-based menu represents a significant change for France, where meat consumption is among the highest in the world at over 80 kilograms per person annually. To make the transition smoother, chefs developed 40 diverse daily meal choices across four regional cuisines incorporating vegetables, grains and legumes in innovative dishes like “Veggie Bourguignon” and “Bell Pepper Stir Fry.”
Initial feedback from national teams has been positive about the balanced, sustainable options. Dietitians also provide guidance to ensure all nutritional needs are met on the plant-focused menu. If successful, Paris 2024 could demonstrate hosting the Olympics need not conflict with environmental protection but rather advance both causes through coordinated action. With one year to go, focus now turns to executing these green plans and welcoming the world to the most eco-conscious Games yet.
