The upcoming Panchayat elections in Punjab scheduled for mid-October have run into controversy with several candidates alleging politicization and bias in the issuance of no-objection certificates (NOCs) required for nomination filing. Opposition parties have accused the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) of using its influence to expedite clearances for supportive candidates while deliberately delaying the process for others.
Candidates from various villages across the Nurmahal block have voiced frustration over long wait times at the offices of Panchayat Secretaries and Block Development Officers (BDOs) to obtain the mandatory NOCs confirming settlement of property tax dues and non-encroachment of public land. Congress leaders in the area have alleged direct handover of certificates to AAP-backed nominees while deliberately delaying processing for others.
Similar accusations of partiality have emerged from Sultanpur Lodhi village as well, with claims that candidates have been directed to first seek clearance from the local AAP leader before their applications could be entertained. The party in-charge has acknowledged coordination efforts to arrive at consensus candidates.
Opposition MLAs have raised concerns over numerous calls seeking help to navigate administrative hurdles. While election authorities have pledged smooth functioning, crowded conditions at verification counters are reportedly leading to inefficient handling of applicants. Political leaders demand a level playing field to ensure free and fair rural polls.
