Pak’s I-Day celebrations turn deadly: 3 killed, over 60 injured in aerial firing

KARACHI, Aug 14: At least three people, including an eight-year-old girl and a senior citizen, were killed and more than 60 others injured in incidents of “reckless” aerial firing during Independence Day celebrations in Karachi, according to local media reports.

The fatalities occurred in separate areas, with the child struck by a stray bullet in Azizabad Block-8 and a man named Stephen killed in Korangi. Another death was reported from a different locality.

Rescue officials said the city erupted with gunfire and fireworks at midnight, leaving at least 64 people with gunshot wounds — several in critical condition — admitted to various hospitals.

Police have condemned celebratory firing as dangerous and irresponsible, appealing to citizens for safer festivities. Law enforcement launched citywide raids, arresting 20 suspects and seizing weapons.

Gunfire was reported from multiple areas, including Liaquatabad, Baldia, Korangi, Keamari, Lyari, Akhtar Colony, Mehmoodabad, Jackson, Orangi Town, and Paposh Nagar, with further incidents in North Nazimabad, Surjani Town, Sharifabad, Zaman Town, and Landhi.

Authorities also reported five separate shooting deaths linked to robbery attempts and stray bullets. Investigations are ongoing, with police vowing strict action against offenders. (Agencies)
