Rajouri, November 26: The alleged nexus between contractors and officers of Public Works Department (PWD) has led to withering away of the black-topping of newly constructed road in Thandamandi area of Rajouri.
According to sources, the quality of the black-topping has deteriorated significantly, raising questions about the accountability and transparency of the PWD officials and contractors involved.
“We cannot condone the nexus between PWD officers, employees, and contractors, where commissions and kickbacks take precedence over quality work,” said sources, adding that despite these allegations, the Superintendent Engineer, PWD Rajouri has dismissed any responsibility.
Talking to Northlines, the Superintending Engineer stated, “I am not responsible for every single thing. I neither withhold documents nor pay much attention to the work.”
Castigating approach of the SE, sources said that this indifferent attitude reflects blatant disregard for public welfare.
“Who will listen to complaints about the poor workmanship? If the Superintendent Engineer is not responsible for the work, why even have such a position in Rajouri?” questioned a source, adding the Anti Corruption Bureau and other authorities must launch a thorough investigation into the projects, examining records and holding officials accountable.
Sources also alleged that the Superintendent Engineer, PWD is seldom present in Rajouri for listening to such complaints, who often spends only one or two days a week in the district while reportedly staying in Jammu the rest of the time.
They added that the locals who visit PWD offices report rude behavior from clerks and officials.
“The employees of the PWD, especially clerks use rough language, and the senior officers become enraged when asked about accountability,” said sources, adding that the higher authorities, including the Lieutenant Governor’s administration and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, should take a strict action against negligent officials.
They have demanded the transfer of such individuals to non-public-facing roles and replacement with honest officers committed to public service.
Sources suggested, “Officials who do not care about public welfare should be assigned desk jobs far from public engagement. We need people who genuinely care about the community.”
