New Year celebrations: Security on high alert in J&K

Drone, AK Magazine, PIA-marked balloon seized in border areas

Jammu Tawi, Dec 29: To ensure safe New Year celebrations, security forces in Jammu and Kashmir have intensified checking and monitoring across high-influx areas, including venues hosting parties, as part of a maximum alert.

According to the details available, the additional checkpoints have been deployed at entry points, plugging every major road connectivity with enhanced patrols, area domination exercises, and surprise verifications to thwart any potential threats during the festive season.

Amid these measures, multiple suspicious recoveries were reported in forward and border districts, officials said.

They said that in Poonch district’s Mendhar sector, the Special Operations Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police, acting on specific intelligence, recovered an unidentified drone abandoned in an open field at Gohled village.

A police team promptly secured the site, seized the device, and initiated an investigation to determine its origin and possible operator, officials said.

Separately, during search operations in Udhampur district’s Chenani area, security forces recovered a magazine of an AK assault rifle along with seven live rounds from an open field in Sudhmahadev.

In Jammu’s Akhnoor sector, an aircraft-shaped balloon bearing markings of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) in English and Urdu was seized from an agricultural field in border village Gurah Manhasa, Pragwal area.

Officials stated that the balloon was likely drifted across the border by wind. These incidents underscore the heightened vigilance along the Line of Control (LoC) and International Border (IB), with increased deployments and anti-sabotage checks in urban and hinterland areas.

Authorities have appealed to citizens to stay vigilant and immediately report any suspicious objects or activities to the nearest police station for swift action.

BSF on high alert along JK borders

Srinagar, Dec 29: Security forces along the Line of Control (LoC) and International Border (IB) in Jammu and Kashmir have been placed on high alert ahead of New Year celebrations, officials said on Monday.

A senior official said that the heightened vigilance aims to ensure robust border security and prevent any infiltration or ceasefire violations during the holiday period.

Key frontier areas, including Gurez sector, Uri, Karnah, Tangdhar, and the other sectors in Jammu region, are under close surveillance.

Along the IB in Jammu, the BSF personnel are conducting round-the-clock patrolling, digital monitoring, and other precautionary measures.

“Troops have intensified surveillance along the LoC, maintaining strict dominance over sensitive sectors. Our forces are fully alert and prepared to respond swiftly to any infiltration attempts,” the official said.

Meanwhile, the security forces continue to enhance border management using advanced technology. Smart fencing systems have been installed at critical points, while robotic surveillance devices patrol difficult terrain to provide real-time intelligence, another senior security officer said.

Officials said drones and quadcopters equipped with high-resolution cameras and night vision enable continuous 24×7 monitoring. They added that bulletproof vehicles and all-terrain transport allow rapid troop deployment across mountainous regions.

“Troops regularly undergo training drills simulating infiltration attempts, bunker attacks, and coordinated responses to maintain operational readiness,” they said. “The safety of civilians near the border is our top priority. Dominance along the LoC is critical, and our troops remain committed to maintaining peace through vigilance.”

BSF jawans deployed along the Indo-Pak border are maintaining high alert, with female personnel actively participating in national security duties, the official said, adding that these measures are aimed at ensuring a secure environment for both residents and tourists in Jammu and Kashmir during the New Year period.
