Srinagar, December 5: National Conference (NC) Member of Parliament Hasnain Masoodi has urged the Government of India to respect the public mandate in Jammu and Kashmir and uphold democratic values. Speaking to reporters, Masoodi emphasized the need for the central government to recognize the aspirations of the people and allow the democratically elected government in the region to function independently.
Masoodi described December 5 as a significant day tied to the region’s identity and self-respect. “This day holds importance for us, and the way to respect it is by honoring the sentiments of the people,” he stated, underlining the importance of public sentiment in governance.
He also criticized the government’s failure to adhere to its business rules, questioning the delays in decision-making processes. Highlighting the importance of historical days like July 13 and September 8, Masoodi called for meaningful steps to honor these dates in the future. “Respecting public sentiment should translate into concrete actions,” he added.
The NC leader further raised concerns over recent surveys and policies that, in his view, violate the 1991 Religious Places Act and sow divisions among communities. He accused the government of attempting to “cultivate hatred” through such measures and urged the public to reject divisive tactics. “This new method is designed to divide the people, and we must not allow it. It is not acceptable in any form,” Masoodi asserted.
Masoodi concluded by appealing to the central government to prioritize unity and respect for democratic institutions, stressing that an independent, functional government in Jammu and Kashmir is crucial for the well-being of both the region’s people and the nation. (KINS)
