New Delhi, Dec 5: Leaders of several opposition parties from the INDIA bloc in a unique protest on Thursday wore black jackets reading “Modi Adani Ek Hai” and “Adani Safe Hai” to demand a joint parliamentary probe into the Adani issue. The protest was led by Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi.
Rahul Gandhi asserted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi cannot allow an investigation into Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani, as it would amount to investigating Modi himself. Congress MPs, including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and lawmakers from other opposition parties such as RJD and the Left, participated in the protest.
Both Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi called for a discussion in Parliament on the recent indictment of Adani by a US court on charges of bribery and fraud. They demanded that Prime Minister Modi address the issue in the House.
The protest took place in front of Parliament’s Makar Dwar, after a Lok Sabha Secretariat advisory and Speaker Om Birla’s directive to avoid protests on the steps leading to Parliament. A little later, the protesting MPs gathered in front of the Samvidhan Sadan and raised slogans against Modi and Adani.
The Lok Sabha Secretariat had issued an advisory on Tuesday, urging MPs not to protest in front of Parliament gates, citing safety and security concerns. This followed opposition MPs’ earlier protests on the steps of Makar Dwar on Tuesday and Wednesday.
While most opposition parties have rallied behind the demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) investigation into Adani’s alleged involvement in various scams, the TMC has stayed out of the protests. The Congress party, in particular, has said that Adani’s indictment “vindicates” its call for a JPC probe and has demanded the immediate arrest of Adani.
The Adani Group has dismissed all allegations as “baseless.”
