NASI Scientist delivers award lecture at JU

Tawi:  Department of Botany, University of Jammu in collaboration with 100 years old Indian Botanical Society (IBS) organized 3rd Prof. S. N. Chaturvedi Memorial Award Lecture entitled “From biology to biotechnology” by Prof. C. Manoharachary, FNASc.,FNAASc., NASI Platinum Jubilee Scientist from Department of Botany, Osmania University, Hyderabad, Telangana. The award is instituted by Indian Botanical Society in honor of Prof. S. N. Chaturvedi, an eminent botanist of the country who had a glorious career in Botany both as a teacher and researcher at R.B.S College, Agra University. The lecture was delivered in hybrid mode i.e., online through google meet platform and offline mode, wherein 25 participants joined from the Seminar Hall of Department of Botany, University of Jammu. More than 80 participants attended the event through online mode. Prof.Manoharachary while delivering his lecture on “From biology to biotechnology” spoke on how biotechnology can be done only when biodiversity is available. He elaborated on the application of modern techniques like molecular sciences, DNA fingerprinting, etc in understanding the subject. Prof. Manoj K Dhar, Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu and Chief Guest of the occasion in his address said that in the tough trying times of the Covid-19 pandemic, the has realized the importance of biotechnology through biology.

Prof. A. K.Koul, retired Professor of Botany, University of Jammu; an eminent botanist of the country and having a very close association with late Prof.S. N. Chaturvedi also spoke on the occasion and apprised the audience about the latter's working, teaching and leadership skills. Others who attended the event included Prof. R. K. Rampal, Dean Life Sciences; Prof. Anima Langer, Prof.GeetaSumbali, and Prof.Namrata Sharma, Dr.Sikander, Dr Geeta, Dr.Harpreet and Dr. Uma from the Department of Botany, University of Jammu.
