Modi slams TMC over ‘corruption’ in Bengal


New Delhi: PM Narendra Modi on Saturday said unbridled corruption by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government was hurting the reputation of West Bengal in front of the entire nation. Addressing a BJP rally at Krishnanagar in Nadia district, Modi said the TMC government had perfected the of “turning schemes into scams”. Modi said 25 lakh fake beneficiaries were enrolled by the TMC government for the MGNREGA scheme. He also accused the Mamata Banerjee government of appropriating centrally sponsored schemes by “giving the scheme its own sticker”.

The PM accused the TMC of putting hurdles before various pro-poor welfare schemes (e.g. Ayushman Bharat and Ujjwala) launched by the Central government. Stating that the next five years were going to be crucial as the county would make huge strides toward development during the period, Modi appealed to the people to elect the BJP in all 42 Lok Sabha seats in the state. Referring to Sandeshkhali where women levelled charges of sexual abuse against TMC leaders, Modi said the intention of the state government was to protect the culprits. Meanwhile, the PM unveiled development projects worth Rs 21,400 crore in Bihar's Aurangabad district. It was his first Bihar visit since the NDA returned to power in the state.
