Srinagar, Apr 01: A policeman was killed and his rifle snatched when militants attacked the guard post of a senior BJP leader at Aribagh area of Nowgam in Srinagar on Thursday.
This is the second attack since Monday when militants attacked Lone Building in Sopore area of Baramulla district, killing two Municipal Councillors and a policeman.
A police official told that militants attacked the guard post of BJP leader Muhammad Anwar Khan at Aribagh, Nowgam in Srinagar. “The militants fired indiscriminately at the sentry injuring him critically. They also took away his riffle,” the official said.
Medical Superintendent SMHS hospital Srinagar Dr Nazir Choudhary said that the police man identified as Rameez Raja was brought dead to hospital. “He had multiple bullet injuries,” he told.
A doctor at the hospital said that they tried their best to resuscitate the policeman but “he had succumbed before reaching the hospital.” “He had serous bullet wounds on his chest,” the doctor said.
BJP leader Anwar Khan is party's district General Secretary for Baramulla and incharge Kupwara district.
Soon after the attack, senior police officers including IGP Vijay Kumar, SSP Srinagar Sandeep Chaudhary, and other officials visited the spot to take stock of the situation. As per witnesses, entire area was sealed and massive searches launched.
BJP leader Anwar Khan said that today's attack was third of its kind on him. “Earlier in 2018, three PSOs were killed in an attack on me. Before that another attack was carried out on me in which I escaped unhurt. Luckily, I had left for at 5 am today. The attack took place in between 10 am and 11 am, the exact time, when I leave my house to meet people or to visit party office,” said Khan. He said the slain cop Rameez was with him for the past six months. “I strongly condemn his killing,” Khan said.
He demanded enhanced security cover for all the politicians who are vulnerable to attacks. “Let me tell you honestly, not much is being done to protect the politicians who face life threats. It's high time to increase the security of all those who are militants' radar,” he said.
BJP J&K spokesman Altaf Thakur while condemning the attack paid rich tributes to slain cop Rameez. “Such attacks are highly condemnable. I express my sympathy with the family members of slain police man,” he said.
