Major Indian carrier joins hands with Japanese airline
In a move that will boost connectivity and provide flyers with seamless international travel options, India’s largest domestic airline IndiGo has announced a codeshare agreement with Japan Airlines (JAL). Under the pact, IndiGo will add its ‘6E’ designator code to select JAL operated flights between India and Japan. At the same time, JAL will put its ‘JL’ code on key IndiGo operated domestic routes within India.
The codeshare alliance between the carriers will allow passengers travelling between the two countries to purchase a single ticket for the entire multi-carrier itinerary. Flyers will be able to check-in for their connecting flights at the first point of departure and enjoy luggage checked through to their final destination. For Indian passengers heading to secondary cities in Japan, the partnership opens up more convenient one-stop options combined with IndiGo’s domestic network. Similarly, Japanese travellers can easily access major leisure and business hubs within India through seamless connections.
Both airlines have received regulatory approvals from relevant authorities. The codeshare is aimed at boosting tourism and trade links between India and Japan which share close cultural ties. Frequent travellers will be the main beneficiaries with simpler bookings, coordinated schedules and interline baggage policy across flights operated by either carrier. The agreement is set to commence in the coming weeks subject to the integration of flight timings and system procedures.
