In a tightly contested UEFA Euro 2024 semi-final played at the Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund, England defeated Netherlands 2-1 thanks to a late match-winning goal from substitute Ollie Watkins. The game ebbed and flowed with both teams producing moments of attacking flair, keeping fans on the edge of their seats throughout.
Netherlands shockingly took the lead in the 7th minute through a long-range rocket from Xavi Simons that gave England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford no chance. However, the Three Lions found an equalizer through captain Harry Kane’s confidently dispatched 18th minute penalty after Denzel Dumfries was adjudged to have fouled inside the box.
The game remained in the balance with both sides creating chances. Phil Foden almost put England ahead but saw his effort cannon back off the woodwork. Meanwhile, Virgil van Dijk’s header was palmed away by the excellent Pickford. As the game entered the final stages and extra time beckoned, England manager Gareth Southgate turned to Watkins who made an immediate impact, turning smartly before firing home decisively in the 86th minute to spark jubilant celebrations.
The win means England will play in a second consecutive Euro final, this time in Germany, as they seek a first ever European Championship title. Netherlands can be proud of their efforts, pushing one of the tournament favorites all the way, but it is England celebrating a place in Sunday’s showpiece match against either France or Spain.
