Kota: J&K NEET aspirant dies by suicide, 15th case this year

Kota, May 26: An 18-year-old NEET aspirant from Jammu and Kashmir allegedly hanged herself from the ceiling fan of her paying guest room here at Pratap Chouraha in Kota, police on Monday said. This marks the 15th student suicide in Kota this year and the second in May alone.

The deceased, identified as Zeeshan, reportedly called a relative before taking the step and indicated her intentions. The relative, Burhan, immediately contacted another student, Mamta, living in the same building. Mamta rushed to Zeeshan’s room, which was locked from inside, and called for help.

Locals broke the door open using a grinder borrowed from nearby carpenters, but found Zeeshan hanging from the ceiling fan. She was taken to a hospital, where she was declared dead.

According to police, Zeeshan had returned to Kota about a month ago. While she was earlier enrolled in a coaching institute, she was preparing through self-study this time and had not joined any centre.

The room did not have the mandatory ‘anti-hanging device’—a metal cage-like safety measure installed on ceiling fans in many PG accommodations in Kota.

This incident follows the suicide of another NEET aspirant from Madhya Pradesh earlier this month, underscoring the mounting pressure and mental health concerns among students in Kota’s coaching ecosystem. An investigation is ongoing. (Agencies)
