It is unfortunate that despite repeated advisories and warnings from the authorities, there are still certain ‘unscrupulous’ courier operators indulging in delivering parcels containing drugs that have been prohibited from sale without proper prescriptions of authorized medical professionals. These substances, being intoxicating in nature, continue to be misused by substance abusers, thereby aggravating the drug menace that has already eaten into the health and wealth of the society, especially the younger generation.
In this context, reportedly the police recently seized a sizeable consignment of Pregabalin-containing capsules from the Delhivery Courier Service Centre in Banihal, once again bringing to the fore the disturbing trend of courier networks being exploited for transporting illegal drug consignments.
According to officials, acting on specific and credible inputs, SHO Banihal along with police personnel conducted a well-coordinated operation in the presence of the Drug Inspector Ramban. The seizure comprised 915 Pregabalin capsules, valued at approximately Rs. 27,613.40, and the consignment was believed to have been booked under the names of different individuals in an apparent bid to avoid detection.
It is, no doubt, laudable that the police has taken swift cognizance of the matter. However, what deserves deeper attention is the fact that black sheep continue to exist within the courier business, who by their deliberate or negligent actions are allowing illegal drug trade to flourish under the garb of routine parcel movements.
The investigation in the Banihal case must, therefore, be carried out in a highly professional, meticulous, and time-bound manner to identify the source, supplier, handlers, and intended recipients of the seized consignment. Only a thorough probe can help dismantle the network and tighten the noose around the real culprits who are exploiting courier channels to circulate this ‘slow poison’.
Courier services today constitute an essential component of the modern logistics chain, connecting towns, businesses, and individuals. This crucial role makes it imperative for courier operators to uphold the highest standards of compliance, verification, employee vetting, and parcel scrutiny so that their platforms are not misused by those engaged in illegal activities.
All said and done, the time is ripe for the concerned government agencies to monitor courier service operations with utmost strictness, leaving no room for misuse or non-compliance with rules governing the transportation of drugs. Any deviation must invite stringent legal action without any complacency. In nutshell, rigorous monitoring, mandatory verification protocols, technological safeguards, and exemplary punishment for violators can go a long way in curbing this menace.
The need of the hour is a sustained crackdown on entities taking undue liberties, so that the youth can be protected from falling prey to harmful substances being circulated through such illegal consignments.
