Srinagar, Sep 13: Police in Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir today booked a fraudster for allegedly impersonating high-ranking government officers and cheating unsuspecting individuals on the pretext of providing jobs.
According to the police, a case has been registered at Police Station Ganderbal against the accused, identified as Illyas Hameed Bhat, a resident of Bakura, Ganderbal.
Police said investigations revealed that the accused had, at different times, posed as a Deputy Superintendent of Police in the National Investigation Agency (NIA), an administrator at Kashmir University, and even as a senior officer in the Enforcement Directorate.
“By projecting himself as an influential officer, he lured several people with promises of government jobs in exchange for money,” police said.
They added Bhat had also prepared forged and fake documents, including job appointment letters and identity cards, to carry forward his fraud.
“Acting on a warrant issued by a court, a search was conducted at his residence today, leading to the recovery of incriminating material such as fake appointment orders and forged identity card,” police said.
A similar case against him is already under investigation at Police Station Nishat in Srinagar.
