Jammu, Aug 2: In a surprising incident, a small drone—believed to have been used for wedding photography—was found abandoned inside an Army camp in the Bari Brahmana area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Samba district, officials said on Saturday.
The drone was spotted late Friday night by Army personnel near the supply depot within the cantonment premises. Security officials immediately secured the area and alerted the local authorities.
Preliminary investigations suggest the drone may have originated from a nearby marriage ceremony and inadvertently flown off course, losing control before entering the high-security zone. “There is no indication of any malicious activity so far, but the matter is under investigation,” officials added.
The drone, which appeared to be a commercial-grade quadcopter often used in event videography, was not carrying any suspicious payload or surveillance equipment. However, given the sensitivity of the location—a military installation—the discovery triggered standard security protocols.
The Army promptly handed over the device to the local police station, where further forensic analysis and inquiry into its origin are underway. Authorities are also checking nearby wedding venues and drone operators for possible leads.
Drones, especially in border and cantonment zones, are subject to strict regulations due to security concerns. Although no foul play is suspected in this case, security forces are not taking any chances.
This incident highlights the growing need for awareness and adherence to drone usage guidelines, especially near sensitive and restricted areas. Authorities have reiterated that drone operators must obtain prior permission and stay within designated zones to avoid legal consequences.
Further details will emerge following a full investigation by the local police and Army intelligence units. (Agencies)
