J&K: 3 members of nomad family killed, another critically injured due soil bund erosion

Srinagar, Oct 23 (UNI) Three members of a nomad family were killed and another critically injured when their makeshift tent came under a huge debris of a soil bund which caved in due to heavy rains in Tral area of south district of Pulwama, on Saturday.
Official sources said, four members of the nomad family who were staying in a tent near a bund at Noorpora area of Tral when the incident happened.
He said local people, after hearing their cry for help reached the spot and tried to rescue them.
All the four occupants were rescued after frantic efforts and taken to the hospital where the doctors said they were in a critical condition, the sources said.
Later, however, of the four succumbed to their injuries at the hospital while the condition of the fourth one is stated to be critical, the sources said.
He said, the critically injured was shifted to Srinagar for treatment.

Compensate fruit growers who suffered losses due to snowfall: Bhukhari
Srinagar, Oct 23 (UNI) Apni Party President Mohammad Altaf Bukhari on Saturday expressed deep concern over the immense losses incurred by the orchard owners due to  unseasonal heavy snowfall and demanded compensation for them.
?The orchardists have to face devastating losses due to this untimely snowfall. It is not just limited to their yearly produce but even the apple trees have been badly damaged due to which its repercussions have increased manifold,? he said.
In a statement issued here, Bukhari said the early heavy snowfall has startled the fruit growers across Kashmir division as the apple-picking was still under process at various places.
Bukhari demanded that the Department of Horticulture must initiate prompt assessment drives in all the districts wherever the trees have been damaged and also compensate the fruit growers.
?The government must act speedily to reach out to these orchardists whose hopes have been crushed due to this inclement conditions. They must be provided with appropriate compensation besides giving them an extension in loan moratoriums, if any,? Bukhari added.
He further urged the government to bring in comprehensive crop insurance schemes where the produce of the farmers and fruit growers is fully covered in case of such natural calamities.
He urged the government to put in place snow clearance machines and medical ambulance service in case of emergencies to tackle any situation. ?Road connectivity and electricity restoration works should be done on a war-footing so that the people will not have to suffer,? he said.
Bukhari also expressed deep sadness over the demise of three members of a nomad family whose makeshift tent got buried under the soil debris at Noorpora-Tral due to incessant rains.
