JAMMU, Mar 29: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday lauded Jammu and Kashmir’s rapid rise in sports, highlighting its maiden Ranji Trophy victory and growing youth participation, while addressing the nation in Mann Ki Baat.
He described the Union Territory’s first-ever Ranji Trophy win as a historic achievement, noting that the title came after nearly seven decades. Referring to the final held in Hubballi, Modi said the victory has sparked widespread enthusiasm among players, coaching staff, and residents across Jammu and Kashmir.
The Prime Minister also praised young pacer Aaqib Nabi for his standout performance, particularly his 60 wickets in the season, which brought him national recognition.
Highlighting broader sporting achievements, Modi said Team India’s triumph in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup was a moment of national pride, reflecting the country’s growing strength in sports.
Emphasizing the changing sports landscape in Jammu and Kashmir, he noted increasing youth participation across disciplines. Modi said the Khelo India Winter Games have positioned Gulmarg as a key winter sports destination, while sports like football are also gaining popularity, indicating a positive shift towards fitness and athletic engagement in the region.
