HYDERABAD, Jan 20: Instagram has increased the maximum length for reels to three minutes, a significant update from its previous 90-second limit. The change aims to accommodate user requests for more time to share longer stories on the platform.
In a video announcement, Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri explained, “You can now upload reels up to three minutes long. We’ve historically only allowed reels up to 90 seconds given our focus on short-form video, but we’ve heard the feedback that this is just too short for those who want to share longer stories. Hope this helps.”
The update is a notable reversal from Mosseri’s earlier stance, where, less than a year ago, he suggested that videos longer than 90 seconds could negatively affect content distribution on Instagram. In April 2024, at an event in New York, Mosseri listed “reels over 90 seconds” as one of the features that could limit a post’s reach.
This move reflects Instagram’s ongoing adjustments to better meet user preferences, even as the platform continues to prioritize short-form content.
