Influencer’s photo shoot at Golden Temple raises questions on strict enforcement of SGPC guidelines

Amritsar – A viral Instagram post by a popular Punjabi singer-actor from inside the sanctum of Harmandir Sahib, also known as the Golden Temple, has reignited the discussion around strict adherence to rules formulated by SGPC (Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee) to maintain the religious sanctity of the holy site. As per guidelines issued four years ago, devotees are prohibited from taking photographs or shooting videos without permission within the premises of the revered Sikh shrine that attracts over 1 lakh visitors daily.

However, like many before him, the celebrity had openly shared pictures from his recent visit to the Golden Temple on social media, posing inside the sanctum while participating in religious rituals. SGPC acknowledges the challenge around policing such instances and ensuring pilgrims respect restrictions, despite multiple notice boards and digital displays educating people on permitted behaviors. While agreeing selfies for remembrance are allowed, repeated misuse on platforms like Instagram that could undermine sanctity is a matter of concern. Stepping up vigilance and possibly limiting phone access remain options if voluntary cooperation is not forthcoming.

The incident has placed a spotlight on SGPC’s effectiveness in implementing its own directives. Representatives affirm vigilance has been heightened and those exploiting the situation for publicity risk invitation if continued non-compliance is seen. Upholding decorum fitting of such a holy site requires understanding and support from all.
