SRINAGAR, Mar 17: A Consumer Forum in Jammu and Kashmir has directed IndiGo airline to pay ₹1.19 lakh to two passengers after their checked-in baggage went missing during their return from Saudi Arabia. The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission Baramulla/Bandipora ordered ₹89,000 for the lost baggage, ₹20,000 for mental agony, and ₹10,000 as litigation expenses.
The Commission, comprising President Peerzada Qousar Hussain and Member Nyla Yaseen, noted that the couple, Mohammad Maqbool Hakeem and Farhat Ara, checked in five bags but received only four. Despite filing a Property Irregularity Report and follow-ups, the missing bag could not be traced.
The complainants alleged that IndiGo staff at Dammam Airport mishandled the luggage and failed to issue proper baggage tags, leading to the loss of valuables worth ₹89,000. The airline denied liability, but the Commission held it responsible and directed payment within 30 days, with 10% annual interest if delayed. The couple was represented by Advocate Umar Bashir.
