Indian-Origin Tech Entrepreneur Acquires Island Near Singapore to Launch Digital Nation for Innovators

Indian-American tech visionary Balaji Srinivasan has moved closer to bringing his ambitious “Network State” vision to life by acquiring a private island near Singapore. Srinivasan, who co-founded Counsyl Inc. and previously served as Chief Technology Officer at Coinbase, envisions a decentralised, internet-native nation tailored for founders, engineers, and tech enthusiasts. His blueprint, laid out in his book The Network State, involves building digital communities around shared principles, which would then obtain physical territory and eventually seek formal recognition as sovereign nations, according to TechCrunch.

Instagram user Nick Peterson, a participant in the project, posted a virtual walkthrough of the island and described it as “a sanctuary for fitness lovers and startup minds.” The day begins with workouts, followed by lessons in AI, tech, and other forward-looking subjects.

“I’m living inside this experimental project called the Network School, initiated by Balaji Srinivasan — a hands-on trial in imagining how a new nation might function,” he shared.

    The Network School

The Network School, founded in September 2024, operates as a live-in pilot for Srinivasan’s Network State idea. Designed to “rejuvenate democracy for the digital age,” the program promotes a mission of personal, physical, and professional growth. Set on the island near Singapore, the three-month residency attracts budding entrepreneurs and health-conscious individuals.

Announcing the project on X, Srinivasan posted: “We got an island. That’s right. With the power of Bitcoin, we’ve secured a stunning location near Singapore for our Network School.”

Participants at the school take part in:

    ·         Fitness Training: Daily gym routines aimed at full-body development

    ·         Tech-Focused Education: Sessions on AI, crypto, and startup fundamentals

    ·         Innovation Culture: Holistic approaches to personal and entrepreneurial success

“We’re looking for what I call ‘dark talent’ — people eager to build ‘win-and-help-win’ communities focused on collective and personal advancement. We want digital nomads, online creators, remote workers, personal trainers, technologists — anyone committed to learning tech, earning in crypto, burning calories, and having a good time,” Srinivasan explained.

    Who Is Balaji S. Srinivasan?

Balaji Srinivasan is a well-known American entrepreneur, investor, and thinker in the fields of technology and crypto. Born on May 24, 1980, to Indian parents from Tamil Nadu, he was raised in Plainview, New York. He holds multiple degrees in Electrical and Chemical Engineering from Stanford University, including a PhD.

Srinivasan co-founded Counsyl, a genetic testing company sold to Myriad Genetics for $375 million, and 21 Inc. (later known as Earn.com), which was acquired by Coinbase. He served as Coinbase’s CTO between 2018 and 2019. He was also a general partner at the venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz and co-founded Teleport and Coin Centre.

An early backer of Bitcoin, Ethereum, OpenSea, and Alchemy, Srinivasan published The Network State: How to Start a New Country in 2022, proposing that digital-first communities can evolve into sovereign entities.

The Malaysia-based Network School launched in 2024 as the first practical step toward this vision. Expansion plans include future campuses in cities like Dubai, Tokyo, and Miami. While his advocacy for decentralisation and criticism of legacy governance structures have earned praise, his ideas have also faced scrutiny, with some critics drawing parallels to modern digital colonialism.

He continues to share his philosophies on platforms such as X and Substack, engaging audiences with discussions on innovation, governance, and economic empowerment.
